The first live Cactus performance in over 30 years was greeted by a wildly enthusiastic New York City audience. Filmed at BBKing’s Blues Club in Times Square, the hard driving, boogie based, blues rock band took control of the stage from the first note, and never released their grip. The original Cactus (and Vanilla Fudge) rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice, two names often celebrated more than the actual groups they were members of, live up to expectation. Original Cactus guitarist extraordinaire, Jim McCarty (Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels) rounds out the rock engine. The now deceased lead singer Rusty Day has been replaced with the more bouyant but still bluesy vocals of Jimmy Kunes, and Randy Pratt has been added on the harmonica. Despite the 30 year hiatus, IT feels like these guys never stopped playing together. Performances include many of the classic Cactus songs such as Evil, One way or Another, and the high Energy Parchman Farm. Cuts from the newest album “Cactus V” (2006) include Muscle and Soul and Cactus Music. Salmon are a band hailing from Gilroy California – in the mid 90′s, after winning a “Battle-of-the-Bands” contest at the now defunct & infamous Cactus Club (San Jose, CA) – they were signed to Red Ant Records. They’ve toured with and supported acts such as Papa Roach, KoRn, Snot, Deftones, Bad Brains, No Doubt among others. Here we have a “live” video for the song “Rubberhead” off of their debut CD “Paco…Drop the Chicken”. I’m re-writing what I originally wrote about this video! I first wrote “rare and never seen”….well, since I posted this video….I’ve received over a dozen emails about how people own a crappy bootleg version of this show (even as far away as Poland – geeez us)….somehow, some way this has been on the underground scene for sometime…and I had no idea…..so, that being said…NO ONE HAS a version that is THIS CLEAN! This is from the MASTER “original” TAPE! This performance was right after their 1st CD was released…the Deftones returned to their 2nd “live” home (the now defunct “Cactus Club” in San Jose, California). I show a series of clips, including the explosive show opener “Root”, followed by “Nosebleed”….then hear Chino cookie-monster his way thru “Say IT Ain’t So” (a Weezer cover)…then I end the entire video w/ the show closer “Engine No. 9″ (TECH INFO): This was a 3 camera shoot at the Cactus Club with sound from the board, shot by (now) Project Placebo Producer Greg R. back in January of 1996 Under-NO-Contract from Maverick Records or the Deftones…this was produced as a “house show” – this is JUST a personal recording captured before anyone really cared about the bands direction….fun stuff! Be witness to Deftones at their beginning…and Chino when he was HALF the man (150 lbs. lighter) than he is now! Enjoy…Placebo.
