Gone to Texas: A History of the Lone Star State

Gone to Texas engagingly tells the story of the Lone Star State, from the arrival of humans in the Panhandle more than 10,000 years ago to the opening of the twenty-first century. Focusing on the state’s successive waves of immigrants, the book offers an inclusive view of the vast array of Texans who, often in conflict with each other and always in a struggle with the land, created a history and an idea of Texas. History of Southwest Airlines

August 10th, 2010 No comments

History of Southwest Airlines

Before 34 years back, Rollin King and Herb Kelleher got together and decided to start a different sort of airlines. They started IT off with a simple notion that if you get your passenger to their destination on time and at the lowest possible fares then people are sure to fly through your airlines and this hold very true.

Therefore a small Texas Airlines turned to become one of the largest airlines in America. Today, Southwest Airlines flies more than 70 million passengers in a year to 60 great cities all across the country and that too 3,000 times in a day.

Southwest airlines have 436 of new jets in the nation with an average age of 9 years. Included in the same fleet are three flying killer whales, Shamu One, two and three, Lone Star One, Arizona One, California One, Silver One, Triple Crown One, Nevada One, New Mexico One and the newest addition Maryland One. Out of these Lone Star One is painted like the Texas flag to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Southwest Airlines, Arizona One symbolizes the importance of the state of Arizona to Southwest airlines, California One that is a high flying tribute to the state of California, Silver One is dedicated to the 25th Anniversary plane, Triple Crown One being dedicated to the Employees of Southwest airlines for their marvelous achievement of the five consecutive annual triple crown awards, Nevada One being a tribute to the state of Nevada, New Mexico One also known as Zia is painted in the bright yellow of the New Mexico flag and Maryland One with an artistic rendering of the Maryland flag.

During May 1988, Southwest airlines was the first airline to win the coveted Triple Crown for a month- Best on time Record, Best baggage handling and fewest customer complaints that has been won more than 30 times along with five annual triple crowns for the year 1992, 1993,1994,1995 and 1996 and no other airlines contributed more than the Southwest airlines.

Revolution in Texas: How a Forgotten Rebellion and Its Bloody Suppression Turned Mexicans into Americans (The Lamar Series in Western History)

Texas Airport Cowboys?

At a small airport terminal in Texas, three strangers awaiting their shuttle flight started conversing about the recent worldly events.

The strangers were of varying cultures.
One was Native American.
Another was a cowboy from West Texas.
The other person was a devout Arab Muslim.

During their conversation, they began to discuss their cultural history.

The Native American stated “once my people were many, now we are few.”

The Muslim then chimed in and arrogantly said, “Once my people were few and now we are many.”

The cowboy looked at the Muslim, shifted the toothpick in his mouth and said, “That’s ’cause we ain’t played Cowboys and Muslims yet.”

Good One!

Why did Big Bend National Park become a park?

I know Big Bend National Park was established on June 12, 1944. But WHY did IT become a park? And if you have information on Big Bend’s history, please tell me! THANKS!

Because it isn’t much good for anything else and is absolutely spectacular as scenery and environment. Love the place – hard to get to even from inside the state of Texas.
This gives tons of founding history detail http://www.nps.gov/bibe/historyculture/eetownsend.htm and other pages on the site discuss features and ancient history.

History Of Texas Hurricanes

July 12th, 2010 No comments

history of texas hurricanes

You went to a certified class, took the exam and mailed you application, money and certificate of achievement to the Department of Insurance. They mailed you your very own Insurance Adjuster’s License. But you have yet to work one single claim! No one has called you and you really don’t have a clue what to do-right?

IT seems to me that the majority of people who become licensed adjusters get into the Catastrophe Adjuster field because they have a friend or relative who “made a ton of money” in a short period of time following a Hurricane, and they simply want some of that action. Now there is no doubt that there are plenty of folks who have become licensed adjusters by attending a certified training course and then immediately went to work after a hurricane and made some money. But there are just as many people who secured their adjuster’s license and are very frustrated, having never worked a single claim, having waited weeks, months or even a year before finally just giving up.

What is the secret? Luck? Timing? Four Hurricanes in one year? The secret is no secret; it is simply knowing something more about the insurance claims business other than the fact that your next door neighbor made enough money last year as a Cat Adjuster that he bought a new pick up!

You need to understand some basic things about becoming an independent insurance adjuster before you jump off the shore into the murky waters of the insurance claims business. Who will hire you? How do you find them? How do you present yourself to them?

You also need to know what it is they actually need in terms of experience or at least what skills you will need before they will consider you to work storm claims for them. Will they train you? Are you trained on an estimating system like Xactimate? What difference would it really make for your cause if you could let a perspective employer know that you had already been trained on Xactimate or Xactimate 27, or Xactimate 27 with Sketch-the most updated version of this claims estimating system. What if you could tell them that you had attended a Basic Fundamentals of Adjusting class? Would that help your cause?

When you were contemplating paying hard earned money to attend an adjuster licensing school, you may have been under the impression that this was all you need to do before you could start work as a Cat Adjuster. As stated, this can happen, but in my experience of thirty years in this industry, that would be the exception, not the rule. Oh there are several large insurance companies that have, on occasion brought in hundreds of ‘trainee adjusters’, run them through a three to five day class and then handed them claims and pushed them out the door. But again, four hurricanes in a couple of months time happens about every, oh, say-100 years.

My advice is to take the next steps BEFORE a storm hits. Get estimating software training, get at least a Basic Adjuster Course under your belt and do some serious investigation into the claims industry. Find out who you should be sending your resume to. Start with http://www.catadjuster.org, a website made specifically for insurance adjusters, find out who the big independent adjusting companies are who have a history of hiring Catastrophe Adjuster’s and find an adjuster who will personally ‘Mentor’ you. You’ll way ahead in the game.

Jeffrey W. Perkins is the owner and President of The Legacy Group, the parent company of TLG Claims and TAAS-The American Adjusting Schools. TAAS offers the Texas All-Lines Adjuster License by experienced instructors who are adjusters and who bring a 3 Day Class to the public-Nationwide!

The American Adjusting School provides licensing for the valuable Texas All-lines Adjuster Pre-license Course which gives the adjuster, contractor, roofer or estimator an all-lines adjuster license that is reciprocal in 32 states. Anyone interested in the TAAS 3 Day School should go to the TAAS website at: http://www.adjustingschools.com or call 469-287-5303.
